Paul Mellott Wins the NSSGA Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award

The National Stone, Sand & Gravel Association today named Paul C. Mellott, Jr., chairman and CEO, H.B. Mellott Estate, Inc., Warfordsburg, Pa., recipient of the ninth annual Barry K. Wendt Memorial Commitment Award for his dedication to the construction aggregates industry, his family and his community.

"Paul Mellott exemplifies the best of the best through his commitment to the aggregates industry, his community and his family," said NSSGA Chairman of the Board Richard J. Feltes, Feltes Sand & Gravel Elburn, Ill. "We are proud to have such a respected and dedicated member of our industry, who is committed to public service, to honor with the Wendt Commitment Award."

Mellott is a former chairman of the National Stone Association, a longtime member and former chairman of the Maryland Aggregates Association, board member of the North Carolina Aggregates Association, member of the Pennsylvania Aggregates Association and the Virginia Transportation Construction Alliance. He currently serves as the chairman of NSSGA's ROCKPAC and is an active member of the Board of Directors.

A third generation owner of H. B. Mellott Estate, Inc., Mellott learned not only his skills, but also important lessons about honesty, integrity and teamwork from his grandfather and father. A true family business, H. B. Mellott Estate, Inc., benefits from Mellott's adherence to the principles his grandfather handed down.

Mellott brings leadership and a history of success to every position he holds. At NSSGA, Mellott's leadership has helped ROCKPAC achieve record-breaking fundraising for advocacy projects. In his community, Mellott serves on the Board of Directors of Hagerstown Trust Bank, as well as the Board of Governors of the Fountain Head Country Club.

"Paul Mellott's volunteerism and leadership has helped better each organization and association he is involved in," said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson. "We are thankful for his efforts at NSSGA and value his commitment to excellence."

The award is named for Iowan Barry K. Wendt (1946-1997), a Cedarapids, Inc., employee and industry leader who was universally recognized as a leader in the aggregates industry. He had served as chairman of the Manufacturers Divisions of both the former National Aggregates Association and National Stone Association. Each year, the Memorial Commitment Award goes to an individual who exemplifies the qualities of leadership and commitment demonstrated by Wendt. It is the association's highest individual service award.

Based near the nation's capital, NSSGA is the world's largest mining association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than 90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel produced annually in the U.S. and approximately 117,000 working men and women in the aggregates industry. During 2005, a total of about 2.91 billion metric tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $17.4 billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
